This study estimates that GPOs save the U.S. health care industry $36 billion dollars annually in price savings and over $2 billion dollars in savings associated with human resources uncommitted to the purchasing process.

A 2008 Update of Cost Savings and a Marketplace Analysis of the Health Care Group Purchasing Industry
GPOs play an important role and make significant contributions to the U.S. health care system. In CY 2008, it is estimated that GPOs save their members and customers between 10 percent and 18 percent on their purchases, or an estimated savings of between $29.3 billion and $64.5 billion of direct savings.
